Amazon India Expands Smartchoice Program to Tablets, Aims to Make Buying Gadgets Easier (2025)

Buying a new laptop or tablet online sounds simple—until you’re faced with dozens of models, each flaunting specs like RAM, processor speeds, display resolutions, and more. For many, it’s a headache trying to figure out what all those numbers mean or which device actually fits their needs.

Amazon India seems to get that. After seeing some success with its Smartchoice program for laptops, the company is now extending the same idea to tablets. The goal? To make it easier for shoppers to pick the right device without getting lost in technical details.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening here.

What Is Smartchoice, Anyway?

The Smartchoice program isn’t about throwing more tech specs at you. Instead, it asks a simple question: What do you want to use your device for?

Whether it’s something basic like checking emails and watching YouTube, or something more intense like graphic design or gaming, Smartchoice organizes products based on real-world use cases.

Once your needs are sorted, the program recommends devices that meet certain performance benchmarks. These aren’t just Amazon’s picks, either—the benchmarks are set by independent technical experts. The idea is to avoid the usual confusion of comparing processors or display types and help you focus on what matters for your particular use.

So far, this approach seems to have worked pretty well for laptops. Amazon says that in 2024, 1 out of every 4 laptops sold on its Indian site came from Smartchoice recommendations.

Why Expand to Tablets?

It’s no surprise Amazon decided to bring tablets into the mix. In India, tablet sales are growing fast—up 26% in 2024 alone. With people using tablets for everything from remote work and online classes to streaming and gaming, the market is packed with options. And, like laptops, picking the right tablet often means sifting through a sea of specs and brands.

With Smartchoice now covering tablets, shoppers can filter choices based on what they actually plan to do with the device. Whether it’s for education, entertainment, or professional tasks, the program lists tablets that meet those specific needs.

Brands currently featured include familiar names like Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, Honor, Acer, and HP.

How This Could Help Shoppers

If you’re comfortable comparing specs and hunting for deals, you might not feel the need for a program like Smartchoice. But for a lot of buyers—especially those who aren’t super tech-savvy—this could be a helpful tool.

Instead of having to decide between two processors or figure out if 4GB of RAM is enough, you can choose a tablet based on the type of use it’s built for. The fact that recommendations are checked by third-party experts could also give some shoppers more confidence in their choice.

Amazon says that after launching Smartchoice for laptops, they saw sales triple in that segment, with a noticeable bump in premium laptop sales. It’s too early to say if tablets will follow the same trend, but the expansion suggests Amazon thinks the formula works.

Some Examples of What’s on Offer

To give you an idea of what Smartchoice covers, here are a few devices currently listed:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE – Built for entertainment and productivity, with AKG speakers and an IP68-rated S Pen.

  • Lenovo Tab Plus – A mid-range tablet with an 11.5-inch display and JBL speakers.

  • Acer Swift Go 14 (Laptop) – One of the laptop options, featuring AI tools and Intel’s latest processor lineup.

These kinds of devices are grouped under different categories like entertainment, education, or gaming, depending on their strengths.

Final Thoughts

For Amazon, expanding Smartchoice to tablets seems like a natural move. With the electronics market in India growing rapidly—and consumers often feeling overwhelmed by choices—programs like this might make the shopping process a bit less stressful.

That said, whether Smartchoice makes the cut for everyone is up for debate. Some people enjoy comparing specs and digging into details, while others just want a reliable recommendation without overthinking it.

Either way, as the market grows, tools that simplify decisions could become more common—not just from Amazon, but across the tech space.
